Mensah Sarbah Hall Partners With Risk Management Directorate To Strengthen Risk Governance

The Mensah Sarbah Hall has partnered with the University of Ghana’s Risk Management Directorate (RMD) to develop a comprehensive Risk Register aimed at promoting strong risk governance and accountability within the Hall. This initiative responds to the University’s call for all units to adopt practical and proactive approaches to managing risks in ways that align with its strategic goals and core values.

The risk register was developed by a collaborative team made up of Prof. Nana Yaw Simpson and Mr. Kingsley Agbo from the Risk Management Directorate, together with Prof. Roger A. Atinga, Hall Master of Mensah Sarbah Hall, and Mrs. Eunice Lamptey, the Hall Bursar. The team combined expertise in internal auditing, governance, and hall administration to produce a tailored tool that reflects the Hall’s unique operational and management structure.

Speaking at the presentation, Prof. Nana Yaw Simpson, Deputy Director of Internal Audit and Acting Chief Risk Officer, highlighted the importance of the initiative. He explained that the University of Ghana operates in a dynamic and complex environment involving financial, academic, operational, and reputational risks. A risk register, he said, provides a structured framework for identifying and addressing uncertainties, thereby improving the University’s ability to adapt to change and recover quickly from disruptions. Prof. Simpson commended Mensah Sarbah Hall for taking a bold and proactive step in developing a risk register that captures its operational realities and management priorities.

The Mensah Sarbah Hall risk register covers over 150 risk domains, addressing key aspects of the Hall’s operational management. These domains are aligned with the University’s five-year Strategic Plan (2024–2029), which focuses on:

  • Transformative student experience
  • Impactful research
  • Commitment to faculty and staff development
  • Engagement and partnerships
  • Sustainable resource mobilization and stewardship

By linking the Hall’s risk domains to these strategic objectives, the register provides a structured and proactive approach to identifying, assessing, and managing potential risks that could hinder the Hall’s pursuit of excellence. It also ensures that risk-related decisions are made systematically and in line with the University’s broader mission.

This initiative reinforces Mensah Sarbah Hall’s commitment to becoming the most preferred hall of residence at the University of Ghana through effective governance, innovation, and responsible management. The Hall plans to launch and implement the Risk Register in the first semester of the 2025–2026 academic year, marking an important milestone in its journey toward sustainable risk management and institutional excellence.
