Mensah Sarbah Hall – Mensah Sarbah Hall is the “youngest” of the 5 traditional Halls of residence at the University of Ghana. The rest are Akuafo, Commonwealth, Legon, and Volta Halls. It was opened for occupancy in October 1963 with 246 students when continuing students from the 4 existing Halls, as well as freshers, converged to what was then called “United Nations”. It was opened as the first mixed Hall of the University and was officially commissioned on December 19, 1963, by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Kojo Botsio on behalf of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, first President of the Republic of Ghana. The first Hall Master was Professor E.A. Boateng of blessed memory. Mensah Sarbah Hall is named after the lawyer – Politician – Statesman, John Mensah Sarbah, who played a significant role in shaping the political destiny of this nation through his indomitable leadership in the nationalist movement that opposed the Lands Bill of 1897.
